Chapter Five

Snowflakes fluttered through the air, the large kind that Emmy loved to catch on her tongue. Pure whiteness coated the road, and the thick flakes even clung to the trees lining the lane. Such beauty seemed a sacrilege when juxtaposed with the tableau spread before him. Emmy’s body lay in the middle of the snow-covered road. Broken and lifeless, she stared unblinking at the sky. A few yards away, the overturned sleigh marked the place where the accident happened. As he watched, the fresh snow covered the spots of blood staining the frozen, crimson snow below.

The horses had been found. After running scared from whatever had spooked them, they’d stopped a few miles down the road. That was the first inkling anyone had that something had gone wrong.

A hand tugged at his arm. “Darling, come away. She wouldn’t want you to remember her this way.”

He looked down to find Rosalie, Emmy’s cousin, gazing at him with large, frightened eyes. She’d been with Emmy, but when the sleigh had overturned, she’d been thrown clear. Two scrapes and some bruises were all she’d suffered. She shivered, probably expecting him to put his arm around her, but he didn’t have any warmth to offer. “I’m not leaving her side.”

“She’s gone, darling. That’s just her shell.”

Hearing her talk about Emmy that way pissed him off, but it also brought comfort. In the throes of mindless fear, the horses had trampled her. At least now she wasn’t in pain.

Rosalie slid her arm through his and snuggled closer. Blade didn’t react. He barely noticed her. All he could think about was his beloved wife, pregnant with their first child. In one night, he’d lost everything. “Let’s get you inside, darling. It’s much too cold to linger out here.”

Juggling too many emotions left him numb, so he followed her. She didn’t say anything as she led him to a waiting sleigh. The contraption made a curious sound, like a woodpecker after its meal. Confused, he frowned, and the scene dissolved.

Emotions still strangling his throat, Blade emerged from the dream. He sat up and washed a hand over his face. Though the dreams had been coming for years, until he’d met Emmy, they’d been vague and indistinct—about somebody he didn’t know—and they’d happened sporadically. Now he dreamed of her every single night with crystal clarity. He shook off the last vestiges of the dream, but the knocking sound didn’t go away. Someone was at his door.

A glance at the clock had him frowning as he slid from bed. Three a.m. was not a great time for visitors, and with a house full of Maria’s wedding guests, anybody could be on the other side of that door. He turned the switch on the bedside lamp and slid into a pair of sweats. Soft light spilled into the hall as he opened the door. Emmy turned her face away from the light, but not before he caught sight of her puffy eyes and red nose.

She cleared her throat. “I need the key to your file cabinet.
